Who is Mama Capps?
- Mama Capps is my step”mama” & my friend. She is someone who tells you the truth — whether you want to hear it or not. But she’s never one to delight in criticizing others. She is one who offers simple advice on why things aren’t going the way you want them to … “What have you really done lately to make that happen? THAT’S what I thought.”But she never makes you feel as though your blindness to the answers is at all related to stupidity.
- She is someone who has learned from her mistakes, and never reminds me of my own. She’s someone who hurts, but never gets bitter. She has confidence, but not the brand of pride that lacks humility or empathy for others. She is someone who comforts, but refuses to allow me to wallow in self pity. She laughs with you, not at you — unless it’s the right occasion and she knows you’re OK with that.
- She becomes an insider by offering you an outsider’s sobering, realistic and ultimately optimistic view of your situation. She is comfortable in both Saks Fifth Avenue and Goodwill. As a mama, she loves her Lord, the daddy of our family, and of course, her hodge podge group of crazy kids.
- She is someone who learns, grows, tries and appreciates. She is what all mamas should be — someone who knows she hasn’t done everything right in the past, but doesn’t let that stop her from enjoying the present. That’s “Mama” to me.
